Project Overview

Barton Hills Craftsman Lawn Care

This 1940s Barton Hills bungalow had been through a period of ownership changes that left the garden in a state of long-term neglect. The lawn was overgrown and thatch-heavy, the edges had not been cut in months, and the cottage-style beds along the house had been taken over by weeds.

Since March 2024, the same GreenCraft crew has visited every week. The transformation is not the result of one big project but of consistent weekly work done to the same standard every single visit.

The Challenges

Years of Inconsistent Care Had Left the Property Looking Abandoned.

The lawn had been mowed infrequently over the previous two years, leaving a thatch layer that was suppressing new growth and making the surface uneven. The grass was tall and stressed rather than short and healthy.

The edges along the driveway and the decorative brick borders of the cottage beds had not been maintained properly for so long that the grass had completely consumed them. Restoring a clean edge required significant initial work before maintenance could begin.

The cottage garden beds, which had been a feature of the original garden, were full of couch grass and seasonal weeds. Rather than remove the existing planting framework, we cleared and retained it and replanted with appropriate low-maintenance species.

The craftsman character of the property required a maintenance approach that suited it. Severe modern edging and geometric mowing would have looked wrong on this house. The maintenance style needed to be precise but warm, not clinical.

What We Changed:

  • Scalped the full lawn to remove the thatch layer and prepared the soil for healthy new growth

  • Restored clean edges along the full driveway border and all decorative brick bed surrounds

  • Cleared all weeds and invasive grass from the cottage garden beds

  • Replanted the beds with white knockout roses blue salvia and ornamental grasses suited to the Barton Hills conditions

  • Established a weekly mowing schedule at the correct seasonal height for Bermuda grass

  • Applied pre-emergent treatment in early spring to prevent the weed re-establishment that had plagued previous maintenance attempts

Consistent Care That Compounds Over Time.

By week twelve the difference from the first visit was visible from the street. The thatch layer had cleared, the grass was coming through clean and healthy, and the diagonal mowing stripes were showing consistently across the full lawn for the first time.

The cottage beds took two full seasons to establish properly. The knockout roses are now in their second season and flowering heavily. The salvia provides reliable blue colour from spring through autumn.

The property now looks like a cared-for home rather than a neglected one. The neighbours have noticed. The owners tell us people stop and look when they walk past.

We bought this house knowing the garden needed work but not knowing where to start. GreenCraft showed up every week and just kept making it better. It now looks like the garden it was always supposed to be." — David & Claire H
