Project Overview

Hyde Park Spring Garden Refresh

This Hyde Park bungalow arrived at spring in the state that many Austin properties do after winter: beds full of debris, lawn thatch-heavy from the dormant season, and edges that had been left since autumn. One full day brought it back to standard.

A single comprehensive spring cleanup visit covered the complete scope: lawn scalping, full leaf and debris clearance, bed clearing and mulching, new seasonal planting, and precision edging throughout.

The Challenges

A Winter's Worth of Accumulation Ready for the Growing Season.

The Hyde Park property had not had a dedicated spring cleanup the previous year. That meant two winters of accumulated debris in the beds, a thatch layer in the lawn that was suppressing new spring growth, and edges that had been eroded by winter rain.

The homeowners had new seasonal planting in mind for the spring but the beds were in no condition to receive it. Clearing and mulching needed to happen before anything new could go in, and the bed clearing alone was several hours of work.

The lawn in early spring requires a different approach than a standard maintenance mow. Scalping at a very low height removes the dead winter material and exposes the soil to warmth and sunlight, triggering faster and healthier new growth. Done correctly it looks alarming for about a week and then produces the best lawn of the year.

The timing was deliberate. A spring cleanup done before soil temperatures rise is significantly more effective than one done after growth has started. We scheduled this visit in the third week of March, ahead of Austin's typical growth flush.

What We Changed:

  • Scalped the full front and back lawn to remove the winter thatch layer and expose the soil to spring warmth

  • Cleared all leaf debris and dead winter material from every garden bed throughout the property

  • Precision-cut the full driveway edge and all bed borders to restore clean defined lines

  • Top-dressed all garden beds with fresh dark premium hardwood mulch at a consistent 3-inch depth

  • Installed new seasonal planting in the front beds including pink pentas yellow lantana and blue salvia

  • Swept and blew all hard surfaces including the driveway front path and patio completely clean

Everything Set for the Best Lawn Season Yet.

The scalped lawn looked stark for the first five days. By day ten the new Bermuda growth was visible as a bright even green flush across the full lawn. By three weeks it was the best-looking lawn on the street.

The fresh mulch in the beds made an immediate visual difference. Dark mulch at a consistent depth makes everything in a garden look more intentional. The new seasonal planting was establishing well within two weeks.

The homeowners sent a message saying they could not believe the difference. They had lived with a winter-tired garden for months. One day of professional work reset the whole property for the season.

I knew the garden needed attention but I did not expect the difference to be this dramatic. One day and it looks completely different. We have booked them for autumn as well." — Amy L
